The New Face of Shopping

In: Online Shopping

Online stores in the US market have been posting double digit increases over the previous years for the last few years.  Western Europe is a market where increases are expected to double online sales by the end of this decade. The UK is the leader right now but once France and Germany get going after ramp up there will be a battle for the lead. Germany has the most online users in Europe but has half the sales of the UK and France. Their online users spend much less time online than other countries but they are positioned for future growth. In France the increase will be driven by new customers rather than increased spending but all of Western Europe will be a big factor in increasing total online sales over the next decade.

The big online sellers in Western Europe were event tickets, music, travel, books and consumer electronics. Clothing is running close behind and will probably increase as well. Spain and Italy lag behind but are expected to also show large increases in online sales in the next decade. The Western European market could end up being one of the biggest markets once everyone is ramped up and users become comfortable with buying on the internet. Germany especially has the potential for large numbers.

In the US we pretty much take the internet for granted. If we need Mitsubishi Parts or Hyundai Parts for our cars we almost immediately go to the web and search. In some countries and regions the internet is fairly new and the trust factor has to be developed before their numbers really take off.  When the trust develops the patterns and changes that we have seen in the US will be the same. Retailers will follow suit and open their own websites, advertising will change and marketing will also. Mobile devices will become a bigger factor in the online retail world and the train will be hard to stop once it gets going.

The stroll down virtual main street in Western Europe will look no different than the one in the US except for a few regional twists. This means that the numbers will grow larger each year and online sales will continue to change the way we do business. That includes business to business and business to consumer as well. The reporting will become more sophisticated and the numbers will be more accurate and when that happens the real story will emerge.

Technology has changed a lot of things in this world and the retail business may be one of the things that has changed most due to technological advances across the world. All the peripheral business connected to the retail world have adapted as well and will continue to adapt and innovate year after year. Never before have we seen such a trend in any business. Never before has something been so open to everyone who wants to start a business, big or small. The train has arrived at the station.
